Aplat’s zero-waste design approach
LP found: Be resourceful with material and energy – “Optimize the use of resources and take advantage of opportunities” (BMY Design Lens 2023)
How it shows up: This design uses certified-organic materials with no extra plastic parts added, not even elastic. This ensures long-term use even through many washings. Aplat also upcycles excess material, which also helps minimize energy of resource extraction.
Usually we know this LP is utilized when the designers take care to only use what is necessary.
To understand this principle, think of the skeleton of birds. They manage to get off the ground and fly because their bones are hollow and therefore very light. In other words, their bodies are resourceful with bone material. An interesting, fun fact: non-flying birds have solid bones.
LP found: Be locally attuned and responsive. “Fit into and integrate with the surrounding environment” (BMY Design Lens 2023)
How it shows up: Aplat uses locally sourced materials and makes products across the street, aligning with the eco-conscious consumer culture of the place. Their products connect friends and neighbors over food and wine.
This LP is “outward facing” in that it is about looking out and sensing what is available in the surrounding environment. It is easy to find this LP in products that use “locally,” or sometimes even “freely” available material or other resources like facilities.
